St Mary's Church Halton, Cheshire

Project
South Aisle stained glass restoration following vandalism

Client: PCC | Architect: Donald Insall Associates | Completed: 2009

The Story :
Following an episode of vandalism at the church, the South Aisle window had suffered quite severe damage. Many sections were broken so badly that nothing but a few shards remained. A large amount of what remained was very badly broken.

After careful removal, the glass was painstakingly reconstructed piece by piece on a lightbox and remaining sections reassembled using reversible edge-bonding techniques. Eighteen sections of glass were lost altogether and these were recreated by careful analysis of the remaining glass which allowed us to establish the nature of the original image. The new sections were all marked as being replacements to ensure that the historic integrity of the window was retained.

Conservation documents were drawn up so that a permanent record remained of the work. On completion, protective glazing was installed over the glass to prevent recurrence.
