Recclesia News - Reproduction Georgian Fanlights, Bark St Bolton
22nd January 2012
Recclesia has completed the production of reproduction decorative Georgian fanlights for five properties in Bolton as part of a THI scheme to restore the frontages of a row of listed townhouses. The fanlights are exact replicas of the original fanlights which at one time would have lined the entire street. One property still had an original fanlight in place which was used to inform the design and construction methods of the new reproductions.
Moulds were taken of the last remaining fanlight in order to help form a picture of the decorative castings. However, the condition of the original was such that no successful mould could be obtained, so the conservation studio at Recclesia took the decision to sculpt copies of the original decorative sections using clay which were then used to make moulds for the casting process.
The original fanlights were fabricated using a mild steel sub-frame to support the lead, but the decision was taken to use stainless steel in the production of the new units. This was the only diversion away from the original build method as it eliminated the only known main point of long-term failure due to corrosion.
This is the second large-scale fanlight project completed by Recclesia in Bolton, the first of which saw nineteen reproduction units being made for St George's Terrace a short distance away.
